It is more common than many parents realize for a child to fall behind on one or more scheduled vaccines — due to illness, travel, relocation, or simply losing track. The good news is that catch-up vaccination is a well-established approach to bring a child back on track safely.
The key idea behind catch-up vaccination
Catch-up vaccination does not usually mean starting over. Instead, missed vaccines are scheduled based on the child's current age, the vaccines already received, and appropriate minimum intervals between doses. The specific catch-up plan is individual to each child.
Common situations that lead to catch-up vaccination
- A house move or change of pediatrician resulting in a gap in records
- A prolonged illness that delayed one or more scheduled visits
- Vaccination records that are incomplete or difficult to interpret
- Parents who paused vaccination and want to safely resume
What to bring to a catch-up consultation
- Your child's existing vaccination record or booklet
- Any documentation from previous vaccinations, even if incomplete
- A general timeline of what has and has not been given, to the best of your knowledge
What to expect
During the consultation, your child's vaccination history is reviewed against the National Immunization Schedule and IAP recommendations, and a personalized catch-up plan is worked out — covering what is needed now and what will follow at subsequent visits.
There is no need to feel hesitant about discussing a vaccination gap — catch-up planning is a routine part of pediatric care. See our Vaccination service page for more on how vaccination is approached at this clinic, or read why timely vaccination matters.
